Evidence of the burgeoning popularity of classical music – whatever the newspapers report it still sells tickets – which is clear in Lille’s Clef de Soleil festival.
As the name suggests, it celebrates the summer with classical music concerts every Thursday in July and August. But these aren’t like any concerts. – although they are mostly performed outside to celebrate summer; its often though the charisma of the participants which make these concerts special.
It’s hard to pick one concert to go to – each week the organisers surpass themselves by putting on better and better shows.
But Bogdan Nesterenko on the 27th of August should prove memorable. Bogdan plays the accordion – but not in the way you’ll often hear nightmarish music from children’s entertainers at birthday parties.
Instead, he vividly plays great tunes, giving them extra colour with the accordion. His ‘Danse Espagnole’ is particularly good and he is playing this piece as the penultimate number of his concert. Rarely can an accordion concert have been mouth-watering; this time it truly will be, as in Lille with the classical world watching on, Bogdan Nesterenko will produce a sensational performance.
Things are often dubbed ‘must-see’; this actually is the case.
