Some say life ends at fifty. But not Daniel Lanois. At fifty-seven, pushing fifty-eight, he continues to not only produce great music but to also make it himself.
His latest project, called Black Dub has all the hallmarks of a great musical success. Together with the jazz drummer Brian Blade, and the beautiful voice of Trixie Whitley, Lanois has formed a trio with a quite sensational sound. The youthful tones of Whitley add an edge to the soft tunes of the band.
To place the music in one particular genre is difficult – it flits between many but whilst it appears to be soft rock, blues influences can be picked up in the music.
They may have only released one single so far but if there is one man who knows how to create good music it’s Lanois: he has produced for artists as big as U2 and Bob Dylan and knows exactly what he’s doing. Often, it seems humdrum to pre-empt a band’s greatness. Here, it is merely a way to see them before they become world stars – Trixie Whitley has all the talent her father had and then much more on top.
At the atmospheric Ancienne Belgique – with its moody lighting and compact size – Black Dub will perform arguably the best gig in Brussels of the year.
Rarely can a professional as consummate as Lanois be seen in such an intimate venue. On the 14th of September 2009 he can: a must-see!
