For years, Brussels was overshadowed by its more famous neighbors and visited perhaps only as a quick stop between Paris and Amsterdam. However, many people don’t know that Brussels offers ancient architecture, traditional provincial cooking, and historic paintings in a city that’s also home to modern glass-and-steel buildings, nouvelle cuisine, and cutting-edge art.
Brussels is a great place to visit, especially in the second weekend of August, when one of the biggest events in the city takes place. Hapje Tapje is a one-day summer event in Leuven designed for connoisseurs and bon vivants.
The event brings together more than 40 restaurants, which set up stalls on the street offering small and cheap tasters from their menus. For the beer lovers, on nearby Oude Markt, a beer festival runs in parallel with the food extravaganza. It’s a great opportunity to have a plentiful gastronomic experience.
In addition, one of the highlights of the event is the barman’s race, in which the city’s bar attendants have to negotiate a course carrying a full tray of beer.
So, give it a try, eat and drink extremely well and then let yourself be won over by architecture and art nouveau swirls, designer boutiques and intriguing museums from Hergé cartoons to Magritte.
This years Hapje Tapje is taking place on the 2nd August 2009.
