Jean Morel at Raison D’art

Lille has a reputation for having inferior art galleries in comparison to Paris. Arguably this is true on the classical front – you can’t argue with the quality of art in the Louvre. But if you want to see something a little different, Lille is the place to go to.

And particularly good within Lille is the Raison D’art. The contemporary modern art it showcases is always of the highest quality. The work which is permanently housed there means it is worth a trip year-round.

But this year there is a special reason to visit the Raison D’art. Because from the 13th of November until the 20th of December 2009, Jean Morel is exhibiting his new series of paintings in an exhibition dubbed ‘Portraits’.

Morel is little-known this side of the channel. But that is not an indictment upon his artwork  – he is in the very top echelon of modern artists. His oil on canvas artwork is both colourful and also full of hidden meaning.

The photographs of his artwork do not do it justice. In a 2-d picture, it is impossible to see the way he uses a different thickness of the paints for emphasis. And thus, it really is necessary to pay his exhibition a visit. Usually art does little to quicken my pulse; Morel’s artwork truly excites me.
