Palais des Beaux Art

Lille - Palais des Beaux Arts - 24-07-2008 - 10h54

People might say recommending the Palais des Beaux Art de Lille isn’t pushing the boat out. It’s a lovely classical art gallery they say, but not for them.

How wrong they are. It’s amazing how fickle people are. Just because they don’t like part of a museum, they write the whole place off.

And whilst it’s true that there is some wonderful impressionist artwork – Monet and Rodin are just two of the great artists in the gallery – there is also some terrific newer artwork.

For starters, the exhibition which is taking place throughout August 2009. Titled ‘Miroirs d’Orient’ the exhibition allows visitors to see artwork and photographs from Morocco and Iran dating from 1830 to the present day. The imaged on show are both vivid and occasionally harrowing. But ultimately, they provide a great illustrative insight into what life was, and is, like in those countries.

But this still doesn’t explain why this gallery is such a great attraction. To do that, it requires understanding that calling it a gallery is a misnomer: the word ‘gallery’ has the implication of simply going round viewing paintings on walls.

In this gallery, you can do so much more than that. There are shows on throughout the year specifically made by the gallery for its visitors. These are often of the highest quality and underscore how Le Palais des Beaux art de Lille is about more than its paintings.
