Rarely can it be said that a gig is worth going to just for the visual performance. With Puppetmastaz, that is the case.
They are a band like no other. Whilst it’s 13 years since their inception, a very brief summary of what happened is this: a few crazy German guys were sitting around at home not doing much. They wondered what they were going to do with their lives. Then somebody suggested performing hip-hop but they had no idea as to how they would stand out from the crowd.
That was until in one of the most lucid thought patterns of all time somebody suggested that they don animal puppet costumes whilst they performed hip-hop. Suddenly, the band had a unique selling point which captured the imagination of people.
Ironically, aside from taking eccentric to the extreme, these guys can actually make music – their tunes are really good. And as well as dressing uniquely, they have a unique sound – the influences on their music from electro and funk give their tunes lovely rhythm.
To some people, going to a Puppetmastaz concert could be the idea of hell. But it really is incredible fun. People suspend their disbelief at the ridiculousness of it all and just join in. They relax and let their hair down and come out of the gig revitalised.
Lille is a really relaxed city. But throw in a trip to see Puppetmastaz on the 30th July 2009 at Le Nouveau Siecle and it could be one of the best holidays ever. For anyone. Actually.
