Sounds Jazz club

Sonny Stitt - 52nd Street Jazz Fair

Whilst many music genres are popular in Brussels, none are as popular as jazz. Throughout the city, there are quirky little jazz clubs – gems which you might happen to fall upon by accident yet never want to leave.

But whilst all the jazz clubs may have interesting music, some are of a truly sensational quality. Particularly the Sounds Jazz club in south Brussels.

Many have commented that the club has the feeling of New Orleans or Chicago– the music performed there is true jazz, which any club would love to host. The impression of being in the American jazz heartlands is understandable: The Sounds has a wonderful ambiance that seems to bring out the best in its performers.

Started in 1986 by Sergio Duvalloni and Rosy Merlini, the club is really a haven not just for jazz lovers but also for those who say they aren’t fans of jazz – step inside and you will inevitably be converted to being a fan.

Particularly, if you choose a good night. And the first three nights in October would mark an exceptional choice. The Marc Lelanque blues band play jazz as it is meant to be played – softly, rhythmically, but also giving the music a certain joie de vivre.

For too long, Brits have put up with the sub-standard Jazz which is offered throughout the country. It’s time they heard jazz how it’s supposed to be played. And to do that, they need to go to Brussels.
