La Braderie

Scenes from a flea market - Tie dye guy

Dating back to medieval times the La Braderie in Lille is Europe’s biggest street market. The market is available to everyone in Lille who wants to set up shop for the weekend, so it’s not surprising how this annual event has grown to cover most of the city centre.

To make the most of La Braderie is to get amongst it, as otherwise it can just overwhelm you. Jostle with the crowds as you hunt for bargains or unique treasures that have lain hidden in attics and cupboards for years. There’s also an opportunity to pick up some unique vintage items and accessories to add a bit of French chic to your wardrobe.

As well as the thousands of stalls that line the streets, La Braderie also brings out the competitive streak in the restaurants of Lille as they each try to sell the most portions of moules and frites during the day.

As you walk past waiters will work their charm to encourage you to indulge in their local specialty, which after a hard day of haggling is well deserved.

If you fancy snapping up some bargains or just want to go down to soak up the atmosphere this year La Braderie is taking place on the 5th and 6th September 2009.
