Lille Battlefields Tour

Tyne Cot British Military Cemetery & Memorial, Belgium.

Some of the First World War’s most important battles were fought around Ypres. Lille’s tourist office runs a Saturday tour which takes visitors to the battlefields of Messines, visiting significant monuments, memorials and cemeteries en route.

Highlights of this moving and informative tour include a trip to Essex Farm Cemetery (which provided the inspiration for John McCrae’s celebrated 1915 poem, In Flanders Fields) as well as to Tyne Cot Cemetery, one of the largest Commonwealth military graveyards. There’s also a chance to visit Ypres town centre and Langemark Cemetery, where German soldiers were laid to rest.

The tour is running every Saturday till the 12th December 2009 from the tourist office on the Place Rihour, but you need to book in advance if you want to visit when you’re in Lille.
