It was probably the earliest I’ve ever got up on a Sunday in order to catch the Eurostar in time!! But my friend and I were both really excited, so the early start wasn’t a problem at all!
As we traveled towards Brussels we had breakfast on the Eurostar which was delicious and filling.
Arriving in Brussels at midday we made our way to the tourist info to establish what was best to see in the day – the man there informed us it was Monument day which meant that all the public transport was free!
Taking advantage of this we took the metro into the main central area of Brussels – the Grand-Place GroBe Markt!! The atmosphere was amazing and it seemed everyone was out and about for Monument day.
There were a few music gigs going on in different streets around the Grand Place playing everything from euro pop to classical music. After checking out what was on offer we made our way to the market to try the local dishes and drinks where we sampled somke liqour, although we have no idea what it was!
The architecture in the centre of Brussels is amazing and making our way to the Waiters race at the Palace Royale we had the chance to admire many of Brussels impressive buildings.
The waiters race was fun to watch and had a brilliant buzzing atmosphere! Snails and Oysters were on sale everywhere, but i wasn’t brave enough to try the snails :/
After the waiters race we decided it was time for a late lunch, where we both had some traditional Belgium fare of mussels and crepes, which were delicious!
It was then nearly time for the train home, so we made our way back to the train station and had a beer at a cafe nearby. We were gutted our trip was coming to an end as Brussels has so much to offer.
On the Eurostar back to London the staff were extremely friendly asking us about our little break. We had another great meal on the way home and had some champers to celebrate a good trip!
We both decided we must come back soon to see all of the city as there is so much to see and do!
