Artistic expressions of old and new in Zurich

One of many sights that you shouldn’t miss in Zurich is the theatre Am Neumarkt. Even if you’re not a theatre aficionado, the Am Neumarkt is a must see because of its importance to the city of Zurich. Although on the outside it’s one of the oldest theatres in the city it’s inside will surprise you, with avant-garde performances that push traditional boundaries bringing spectators and artists together in interactive plays.

Despite being a relatively small theatre, the Am Neumarkt manages to host nearly 200 seats and when the opportunity arises, it can become much more welcoming due to the seats being mobile. In fact, some of the plays are performed on a pay-what–you-can basis, making it more of an appealing alternative to budget audiences that otherwise wouldn’t not frequent it.

The experimental plays performed at Am Neumarkt theatre are mainly orientated towards a positive and responsive audience and include dance and theatre performances that encourage its spectators to take part in the spotlight. Its two stages make it versatile enough to host performances at different times.

If theatre is not your cup of tea (although you’d be wrong to miss out on such a unique experience) close to the Am Neumarkt theatre are the Niederdorf and Langstrasse districts where you can find the famous red light district of Zurich as well as a range of Brazilian bars, punk clubs, Hip-hop stages, Caribic restaurants, art house-cinemas, Italian espresso-bars and much, much more. All in all, Zurich is a destination that is worth every moment.

There’s something wrong with the travel directions: you could get to Zurich via Paris using the Gare de Lyon or the Gare de l’Est, but not very quickly via the Gare Montparnasse, which is fine for Britanny or Bordeaux but not anywhere in Switzerland.

Just to let you know that the picture you chose shows the Frauenkirche in Dresden, Germany… Not Zurich. The square where the church stands is called “neumarkt”.
Maybe you want to change that… ;)
